Q: I’m a bit worried as I have not really seen anything that looks like the Image from the website (under 100x) in the cultures. I understand that it doesn’t get dense but I should see things with look like cells, right? I haven’t used a fluorometer but tried using a spectrophotometer to detect chlorophyll, which I didn’t. I'm extracting some material for chlorophyll and will run it at a higher concentration via LC with a diode array detector. Maybe it needs more time I will leave them and see if I can detect cells at the end of the week. So is there a different planktonic phototroph you could recommend. The idea was to make position specific carbon isotope measurements of the amino acids from E.Hux with the idea being what can we infer about the organic isotope record if one position is enriched or depletion. This is why I chose e.Hux since coccolithophores have been around since the cretaceous, but if there is a form that is easier to grow (I will try inoculating some L1 media), or another planktonic phototroph it may be better to start there. Based on what I’ve previously done with cyanobacteria I was estimating that I need between 0.1-0.5g of biomass.

A:If you do not care about coccoliths, why don't you first try changing the medium in the culture that you have, take the white chalk on the bottom of the culture vessel and put that into full strength medium instead of the 1:25dilution. Give it about a week. If nothing grows, we can ship you a E. hux strain that does not make liths but will grow far more robustly-Please check out on our website CCMP370,CCMP379 (both will grow at 20 degrees); CCMP373 (will grow well from 20-24 degrees C). All that I have mentioned are axenic. We could get it out the door as early as next Wednesday (April 5) should CCMP371 not pick up.
