Algae industry to organize to capitalize on growing business opportunities

East Boothbay, Maine, May 28, 2015 – While Mainers have been harvesting seaweed for nearly 80 years for a variety of uses and products, in recent years wild harvests have not been able to meet market demand for some species.  The Maine Technology Institute (MTI) stepped in to provide $50,000 to help form a Maine algal cluster that would include those involved in both macroalgae (e.g., sea vegetables) and microalgae (e.g., seed stock) to help the industry take advantage of a growing market.

A field trip to Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is part of the Northeast Aquaculture Conference & Exposition (NACE), a three-day event bringing together those involved in Gulf of Maine aquaculture to find ways to move the industry forward. About twenty aquaculture leaders will tour the Bigelow Laboratory facility with Dr. Michael Lomas, director of the National Center for Marine Algae and Microbiota, and Dr. Peter Countway, associate director for Algae and Protozoa.
