CCMP1619 was cryopreserved on Oct 3 2013 using 5% MeOH as a cryoprotectant.

The time required to regrow this culture, prior shipping, is approximately 28 days. If interested, please contact the CCMP for the cryopreservation methods (freezing and/or thawing protocols).

Note that aquaculture strains are always maintained as actively growing cultures, even if also cryogenically stored. Therefore, aquaculture strains (see aquaculture express ordering on the CCMP home page) can be shipped immediately upon request.

Q:       We have tried to cryopreserve this strain in the past and have failed. I was wondering if you could share your cryopreservation protocol with us?

A:       CCMP1619 used MeOH as a protective agent rather than DMSO.  11.25ml of the culture was added to 3,75mL of 20% CPA and then mixed.  This was allowed to sit for 17 minutes. 1mL aliquotes were added to cryo tubes and placed in a "Mr Frosty"  Placed in a -80 freezer for 3 hours then placed in LN2 vapor.  I just remembered a rather important piece when thawing from MeOH CPA, we cover the thawing vessel in tin foil for 24 hrs.  Otherwise the chloroplast are destroyed.
